Across the panel, a clear theme emerged: conservation and recreation are not opposing forces—they are deeply interdependent. When we invest in the health of ecosystems, we are simultaneously investing in the quality, sustainability, and longevity of outdoor recreation.
San Luis Valley Great Outdoors (SLV GO!) received $394,000 from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) to support continued coalition capacity and on-the-ground conservation work in the San Luis Valley.
Among the projects funded through GOCO’s Community Impact program is a major investment in Alamosa.
Last week, I had the opportunity to meet with Saguache County Sustainable Environment and Economic Development (ScSEED) and community members for a thoughtful and energizing conversation about outdoor access, community health, and collaboration in the San Luis Valley.
This is a classic SLV route highlighting symbiotic relationships of land, water, and wildlife in south-central Colorado. Leaving south from Alamosa, the first 10 miles are paved before giving way to a long stretch of dirt.
The Rio Inspire is the crown jewel of Alamosa’s singletrack trails. Dropping off of the levee trail, the trail starts in the riparian area and traverses along the Rio Grande as it winds it’s way north.
The limekiln trail system is made up of 5 different trail segments totalling 7.5 miles of trails on BLM land. These trails lead up to or away from the limekiln peak loop which circumnavigates limekiln peak itself.
Kids and families in the San Luis Valley will access more outdoor recreation and nature programs with help from a $2,000,000 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO). Funding will support the San Luis Valley Generation Wild coalition led by the nonprofit San Luis Valley Great Outdoors.
