Through bilingual adventure trips such as biking, hiking, climbing, and camping, the Embajadores inspire their neighbors to explore the Valley’s breathtaking landscapes while promoting active lifestyles and community well-being.
Connecting Culture, Community, and the Outdoors
The San Luis Valley is a region of hard-working people, wide-open spaces, and remarkable beauty. Yet many Valley residents face barriers—economic, geographic, and cultural—that limit access to the outdoors. Nearly half of the population identifies as Latino, and Spanish is spoken in many homes, but traditional outdoor programs often fail to reach these communities.
The Embajadores Program helps bridge that gap. By leading programs from within their communities, our Spanish-speaking ambassadors create culturally relevant and welcoming outdoor experiences for families who might not otherwise participate.
Improving Health Through Access and Inclusion
Access to the outdoors is essential to both physical and mental well-being. Many San Luis Valley residents face barriers—economic, cultural, and geographic—that limit opportunities for regular physical activity and time in nature. The Embajadores Program helps overcome those barriers by connecting families and individuals to nearby parks, trails, and public lands through welcoming, bilingual activities. Our Embajadores are more than outdoor guides—they are leaders, educators, and advocates. Each Embajador receives training in leadership, communication, and outdoor recreation skills, equipping them to guide safe, meaningful experiences.
SLV GO! also sees the program as a pathway for workforce development. By providing paid, part-time positions and professional training, the program helps participants build careers in outdoor recreation, community health, and environmental stewardship—creating long-term local champions for wellness and equity.
