Birdwatching attracts people for a simple reason: it’s accessible, affordable, and deeply rewarding. You don’t need elite athletic ability, expensive gear, or specialized training to start. You just need curiosity and a willingness to look a little closer at the world around you.

One of the most compelling aspects of birdwatching is how little it costs to get started. Unlike many outdoor pursuits that demand high-dollar equipment, birding can be enjoyed with minimal investment.

Yes, some experienced birders choose to invest in premium binoculars or professional-grade cameras with detachable telephoto lenses. But that’s optional. For a beginner, access to an outdoor space, especially one with water, trees, or natural food sources, is enough.

In the San Luis Valley, that could mean a neighborhood park, a local trail, or a designated State Wildlife Area. Opportunity is everywhere if you know where to look.

Gear

You don’t need specialized apparel to participate. Comfortable, close-toed shoes or basic hiking boots will do the job. In cooler months, simple layering—something most people already own, is sufficient to stay comfortable.

And here’s the reality: most people already carry a high-definition camera in their pocket. Smartphones today allow you to zoom, photograph, and document species in impressive detail. While binoculars enhance the experience, they aren’t mandatory on day one.

One essential item, however, is often overlooked: a reusable water bottle. Even though birding is relatively low-impact, staying hydrated while walking and observing makes the experience far more enjoyable.

Open to All Fitness Levels

Birdwatching stands apart from activities like mountain biking, hunting, rock climbing, rafting, or mountaineering. It doesn’t demand peak physical conditioning.

Birding is scalable. You can observe from a park bench, stroll a flat trail, or hike into more rugged terrain—depending on your ability and interest. That flexibility makes birdwatching an activity for all ages and backgrounds. It’s one of the few outdoor pursuits that genuinely welcomes everyone.

How to Get Involved

SLV GO!’s Great Outdoors Embajador (Outdoor Ambassador) Program is formally launching regularly scheduled weekend birdwatching outings beginning in March 2026.

These guided meetups will rotate through prime birdwatching locations across the San Luis Valley. Whether you’re brand new or already curious about identifying species, this is a structured, low-pressure way to start.
